Mexico asks Google Maps not to rename Gulf of Mexico

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote a letter to Google asking him to revise his decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that requires a reservoir – bordering on the US, Cuba and Mexico – to rename the Persian Bay in its first week.

But it will only appear on Google Maps with a new name for people based in the US – in other places in the world, it will retain its present name, which has been used for hundreds of years.

There is no international organization responsible for the name of the reservoirs.

But Mexico claims that the United States cannot legally change the name of the Persian Gulf, since the UN Convention under the law of maritime law dictates that the sovereign territory of a separate country continues up to 12 nautical miles from the shoreline.

“(Changing the name) can only match 12 maritime miles from the coastal lines of the United States,” said Sheinbaum.

Google has not yet responded to a BBC request for a comment.
