Far-right AfD’s win on asylum vote rocks German parliament

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the firewall against the extreme right in German political culture. The memory of the Holocaust plays a fundamental role in modern Germany.

Bundestag made the annual honoring of the victims of the Nazis on Wednesday, during which the 88-year-old survivor Roman Schwartzman appealed to the parliament.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also made a speech to the deputy, calling for the Nazis’s crimes to be never forgotten. He said he should not be “drawn”, which ended our historical responsibility, as the Germans, he said.

This is directly contrary to the POD policy, which criticized the German culture of memory and argued a broader view of the country’s history.

In part, so many were shocked when Friedrich Merz said he didn’t care whether he supports his parliamentary petitions or not.

This is contrary to not only his preliminary statement, but also the official line of his party, which forbids the conservatives to rely on the right -wing parliamentary votes.

The AFD sections were attributed to the right -wing extremists on internal intelligence, but the party is currently interviewed in the second, although the Mertz turned off with them any coalition.

This week, recent surveys have shown that the support of the CDU conservatively reduced a couple of percentage points to 28%, while AFR increased slightly to 20%.

AFD leader Ellis Weidel said the firewall is a “cartel anti -democratic agreement” and predicted that it would collapse in the coming years.

Opening a door to rely on support from the extreme right, is a gambling game for a meter, which believes that its increasingly radical migration position will win the right, which is tempted to vote for AFD.

But it can risk losing support in the center.

Merz finally said goodbye to the latest parliamentary petitions with the era of his more centrifacular predecessor Angela Merkel, who said, “Wir Schaffen das” or “We can do so” when Germany collided with a lot of migrants. And refugees.

These movements are symbolic, signaling what the conservatives would like to do in power. But they are also a specific voter signal about who the dead seems ready to accept support.

Critics say he broke his word on the firewall. No wonder AFD cheered on parliament when the result was announced.
