The government said the changes apply to all visitor visas, including tourists and people visiting family, partners and carers on long-term visas.

It added that only remote work abroad was allowed, and visitors whose employment required them to be in the country still had to obtain the appropriate visas.

New Zealand’s tourism industry generates nearly $11 billion in revenue, according to the government.

Over the past few years, many other countries have introduced digital nomad visa programs in an effort to appeal to the growing number of people looking for travel opportunities while working remotely.

The trend took off in the 2010s, Mainly among young workers who wanted to escape their daily routine. It was further reinforced by the Covid-19 pandemic, when lockdowns around the world led to a shift towards remote working.

Countries offering digital nomad visas include Japan, South Korea, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Brazil, Spain and Portugal.

But the presence of digital nomads in some places has also sparked debate. U South African city of Cape Towndetractors say the influx of remote workers has driven up costs.

An influx of visitors to countries such as Spain and Greece also sparked heated protests against the launch.
