‘Corpse flower’: Australians react to smell of plant in bloom

Almost 20,000 people visited the Sydney Botanical Garden to breathe the endangered plant known as the “corpse” when it flourished.

The plant titanium arum, dubbed the putition, produces a putrid smell similar to “something rot” or “hot debris” within 24 hours after flowering.

The smell is the result of the chemical production that occurs in the plant to attract pollinators.

The flower that is endangered – originally from Sumatra, Indonesia – in the wild is blooming only every 7-10 years. It is believed that there are less than 1000 plants worldwide, including cultivated ones.
