England’s Harry Hall produced an impressive late birdie burst to take a two-shot lead heading into the final round of the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

Hall was four shots out of the halfway mark at Waialae Country Club and in danger of falling out of contention after playing the first 13 holes of his third round at one under, only to birdie four of the last five and post a five-under 65.

86 for the world with his approach on the par-four 14th and holed the next one 45 feet, and Hall took a shot at the 16th and added a two-stroke birdie at the final fifth to move to 11 under.

Hall is tied for fifth in the group alongside Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and former Open champion Brian Harman, while JJ Spawn tops a loaded leaderboard with 15 players separated by just three shots heading into the final day.

“I think the last couple of times I’ve been in contention, I’ve put a little bit of pressure on myself and I’ve been aiming to get it,” Hall said pressure off my shoulders and go out there and just try to make one shot.”

Spawn mixed seven birdies and two birdies to shoot a third-round 65 and hold a one-shot cushion over Germany’s Stefan Jaeger, who jumped on the leaderboard with a week-long 62, Eric Cole and Patrick Fishburne.

The 34-year-old Spawn’s only previous PGA Tour victory in 218 previous attempts came at the Texas Open in 2022. He had four top-10 finishes last year.

Danny McCarthy had started the day as joint leader with Fishburne, but a one-over 71 left him four shots off the pace.

Gary Woodland (10 under), Zach Johnson (8 under) are among 27 players within five shots of the lead, and last week’s Sentry winner Hideki Matsuyama (7 under) is one shot behind and still not outright.
