Bourbon Street will return to normal for the Sugar Bowl on Thursday…New Orleans’ mayor expects to be fully operational by kickoff, a day after the New Year’s Eve terror attack.
The Georgia-Notre Dame game scheduled for Jan. 1 at the Caesars Superdome was postponed in the wake of the tragedy that claimed 14 lives … and while some officials have called for more time for the community to heal, the game will be played Thursday at 13:00.
With thousands of football fans in town for the College Football Playoff contest, Mayor LaToya Cantrell told reporters that the iconic French Quarter street will be accessible to those who want to watch the action from locations in the area.
Cantrell said the street cleanup began early Thursday morning … and ended around 8 a.m.
Cantrell said the city is confident the public will remain safe not only for the football game, but well into the future.
Additional security measures will be in place … officials will install new barriers and hire more police to patrol the streets.
Earlier NOPD Supt Anne Kirkpatrick said his department is getting help from all levels of law enforcement … and they’re treating Thursday’s game like it’s the Super Bowl in the same city in February.
As we reported earlier, at least 14 people have died since then Shamsood-Dean Jabbar drove it the pickup truck is in the crowd Early on New Year’s Day… and dozens of people were injured.
Jabbar was killed after opening fire on the police.
