The tradition of Christmas collections
Thanks to the famous poem “The Night Before Christmas”, we know that for over 200 years Christmas stockings have been “carefully hung up the chimney”. But it is not known how long the tradition started and why it is popular.
Many agree that they pay for the Christmas stocking tradition. In honor of Saint Nicholas. He is an early Christian saint known for his generosity and giving to the needy. He is the real person behind today’s Santa traditions.
The legend is that Saint Nicholas heard of a widow who could not pay dowries for his three daughters. This was a desperate situation in those times. Saint Nicholas threw gold coins into a widow’s chimney at night. One of the coins fell into one of the stockings that was hung up in the fire to dry. The widow and the daughters were overjoyed to find the coins the next morning and their worries were over.
The parable of St. Nicholas continues to remind us of the true spirit of Christmas today! My children are also involved in this Saint Nicholas Day Boot for “St. Nick” is filled with treats every December 6th.
