A 7-year-old boy shot his 2-year-old brother after finding a gun in the glove box, according to California authorities.
The shooting happened shortly before 4:00 pm Monday in the cab of a pickup truck in a parking lot in Rancho Cucamonga, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
The shooting appears to have been accidental, sheriff’s department spokeswoman Gloria Huerta told ABC News.

The boys’ mother had just parked at a mall and was outside the car, unloading things to bring inside, when the shooting happened, Huerta said. Los Angeles ABC station KABC.
The investigation is ongoing; once completed, a report will be sent to the district attorney for review, the sheriff’s department said.
The gun’s type and registration information have not been released.

“Gun safety is a huge responsibility, but it’s also a moral obligation to our children,” Huerta told KABC.
Hundreds of children in the U.S. accidentally shoot themselves or someone else every year. According to the nonprofit organization Everytown for Gun Safety.
Last year, 411 children were accidentally shot, the highest number seen by Everytown for Gun Safety since it began tracking incidents in 2015.
So far this year, there have been at least 270 unintentional shootings by children, resulting in at least 99 deaths, according to the organization.
