Tortilla strips in 22 states contain wheat allergen contamination: FDA

Sugar Foods said it is recalling it Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style after several customers reported that the bags they bought at the store contained more crispy onion strips — another Sugar Foods brand food — than the expected product.

The Food and Drug Administration released the company’s announcement on Friday that the mix led to contamination with an undeclared wheat allergen, as the crispy onions contain wheat, which is not listed on the package of the tortilla strips.

This puts customers with wheat allergies at risk.

“People with a severe wheat allergy or sensitivity to wheat are at risk of a severe or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product,” according to the ad.

Sugar Foods is recalling Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style 3.5-ounce pouches with UPC code 7 87359 17504 6 and a Best By Date of June 20, 2025 due to contamination with an undeclared wheat allergen.

The company explained that this affects 3.5-ounce bags of Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style.

Affected products have UPC code 7 87359 17504 6 and are marked with a best before date of June 20, 2025.

According to the announcement, the company was first notified pollution was contacted last week when a consumer reported finding the wrong product in their packaging.

“No illnesses have been reported to date,” according to an announcement distributed by the FDA on Friday.

The ad also said the products were distributed from September 30 to November 11 and can be found in “stand-up sealable bags.”

The product was shipped to distribution centers in 22 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas. , Utah, Virginia and Washington.

Consumers who believe they have purchased damaged products are able to exchange those products back to the original location of purchase.
