Susan Smith: South Carolina mother denied parole 30 years after killing her sons

The father of her children and the prosecutor in the case also appeared before the board with a request to keep her behind bars.

David Smith, the boys’ father, told the parole board that 30 years in prison was not a harsh enough sentence for Smith.

“That’s only 15 years per child, her own children,” he said. – That’s not enough.

During the trial, prosecutors alleged that Smith killed three-year-old Michael and one-year-old Alex after the man she was having an affair with told her her sons were the reason the couple had no future together.

Prosecutor Tommy Pope said Smith had made a “terrible, terrible choice to choose the man of her family”.

“Susan always focused on Susan,” he said.

During the trial, Smith initially said she was robbed late at night and that the man drove off in her car. While she publicly pleaded for the safe return of her sons, they were at the bottom of a nearby lake.

But as a result, she confessed to the crime.

Lawyers said she suffered a mental breakdown and wanted to die with her children, but left the car at the last minute.

Smith was convicted of murder, but under South Carolina law at the time, she was eligible for a parole hearing every two years after serving 30 years in prison.

According to the state Department of Probation, Parole and Pardons, Smith must vote in her favor for two-thirds of the board members present to be released.
