In late 2023, the left-wing YouTube channel Voice of Seoul released a video purporting to show Kim accepting a Dior bag worth 3 million won ($2,200; £1,800) from a pastor who filmed the exchange in September 2022 on a camera hidden in a watch.
In February, Yun said that the footage was there leaked as a “political maneuver” and did not apologize.
South Korea’s Democratic Party, the opposition to Yun’s conservative People’s Power Party, called the president’s “shameless attitude” “hopeless” at the time.
The scandal has also caused a split in Yun’s party, with one leader comparing Ms Kim to Marie Antoinette, the French queen known for her extravagant lifestyle.
The opposition has also long accused the first lady of being involved in manipulating stock prices. Earlier this year, Yoon vetoed a bill that would have investigated his wife over the allegations.
