Phil Taylor, who has won a record 16 World Darts titles, admits Luke Littler “has the potential” to overtake him as the greatest of all time.
The 17-year-old again showed off his reputation as he claimed his 10th PDC Tour title in his debut year by winning the Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday.
Then he An epic 16-15 win over Gary Anderson Sunday afternoon, The Nuke returned to the stage in the evening to defeating Martin Luckman 16-3 in the final.
Littler is now the favorite for the upcoming World Cup, a year on from his breakthrough tournament at Alexandra Palace.
His win at Wolverhampton came 12 years before Taylor’s first major win at the age of 29.
When asked if his record number of world titles will ever be surpassed, Taylor said talkSport:“I hope not. However, I’ll tell you, if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s this young guy right now.
“He’s got age on his side and he’s got ability, so you never know, you never know.”
Taylor also offered some advice to Littler, adding: “Well, that’s the thing, I’ve seen players come and go over the years.
“It’s a matter of commitment and money is not his motivation, believe it or not, he’s not really that worried.
“He is a typical teenager and is not motivated by prize money.
“It’s great, don’t get me wrong, and he’s safe, more interested in taking care of mom and dad at tournaments.
“It’s nice to see because I’ve seen a lot of players where they start making money and it ruins their career at the time. But this guy, he just sits there, he’s as calm as a mouse, he’s great company to be with, to be with. honest.”
