What Every Parent Should Know About Online Gambling

As US Supreme Court They have removed the legal barriers that banned countries from allowing gambling, about 31 now allow sports betting on phones or websites, and seven states have authorized online gambling in casino. The result of this legal change “is a crisis, an epidemic of gambling disorders and financial disorders, especially for young men,” writes Jonathan Cohen, author of “”Losing a big one: America’s reckless bet on sports gambling.“

Almost half From men from 18 to 49 – or 22 percent of all Americans – they have an active account for sports betting, according to the Siena Research Institute. National Poll Conducted by Farleigh Dickinson University found that ten percent of men between the ages of 18 and 30 can be problematic gamblers, a function of online betting on sports and slot machines. The minor gambling is also on the rise. The biggest demographic group that calls gambling hot lines are teenagers and young adults of their twenties, and Yale Medicine reports That many problems start when players are adolescents. Gamblers who start young are more likely to develop a problem in adulthood. While betting can be another form of entertainment for many, those with a problem have a higher percentage of suicide from alcoholics or drug addicts. In addition, Journal of Pediatrics reported that a minor gambling is associated for misuse of substances.

“If you think your child is not a gambling, or he is an exception, or you are fooled,” Cohen told me. “Your son, if he plays video games or likes sports, is almost certainly gambling somehow,” he added.

Like Minic, some teenagers play games on sites that their parents may not realize that they include betting: Fantasy Fantasy, Prizepicks and Sleeper Picks, for example, fall under the fantasy sports category, and most states allow 18-year-olds to participate. (Anyone except a handful of countries, they require players to be at least 21 to bet on major online sites such as DraftKings and Betmgm.) The technical reasoner and more decisive teenagers can also find ways to circumvent the age requirements of prominent sites. The cool child in high school, Minik said, is what has access to his parents’ Fanduel account and is allowed to bet there.

“Most parents have no idea how much their children are aimed at gambling,” says Les Bernal, who runs the advocacy group Stop predatory gambling gamesS

Gambling experts encourage parents to act.

Talk about gambling

“The messages that children receive for gambling comes from ads and advertising,” Cohen said. Some of the most famous promoters are the largest stars in sports: football legends Eli and Peyton ManningGolfing Standout Jordan Spicebasketball LeBron James and Shaquille o’neal., Riter Red Sox David OrtizS

“These athletes create a level of confidence in gambling,” says Samantha Thomas, Professor of Public Health at the University of Dinkin in Australia. “They think,” If Shack does it, it can’t be a bad thing, “she added.

As discouraged as it may be to dispute the wisdom of the stars, the careful adults should counteract these messages. Many already talk to their children about pornography, drugs and alcohol abuse. The same has to be talked about gambling. “This will not change unless the parents talk about it,” Bernal said.

Gambling Children messages

Traftkings and Fanduel sell the idea that gambling is funny, money should be made and that those who have athletic experience can have an advantage by playing the excess confidence of some boys in the knowledge of their sports.

Thomas advises parents to press the message of the industry’s motives: he encourages gambling not to help others make money, but to take it themselves. Remind them that the gambling industry does not have the best interest for players by heart. They need to realize what most adults are doing – that the house always wins.

Children need to learn that despite their knowledge of athletes and teams, there is no career in sports betting and that gambling addiction is real. They need to understand that “pursuing your losses” – doubling bets after losing a lot – is a symptom of addiction. If they are in trouble, children need reassurance that they can ask for help.

How do I talk about gambling with children

Threats and scare tactics can cause fire.

“If my parents had said to me,” Never bet again! “I would do it more faster,” Rob Minik told me. Bernal said that the children react better to the information. He advised to tell the children that the gambling is highly addictive and informs them that the whole scene is a detachment.

Minic encouraged parents to continue talking about it and facilitated your child to reveal his or her problem. And if the teenager reveals a gambling problem at every level, such as betting or losing more than intended, treat him as seriously as you would drug or addiction to alcohol.

Practice what you preach for gambling

“Do not lead your children to casinos,” Bernal said. “It would be like taking drugs in front of your children,” he added. Parents who are betting should model safe habits and bet responsibly.

On November 12, 2022, Minik took his last bet. A 12-hour gambling followed, in which he lost all his money and accumulated debts, which would take six months to pay off. For the second time in his life, he went to a rehab facility and “detox” by habit. He is free from the desire to bet, said Minik because he finds the point to help other problematic gamblers give up on him. He launched an organization called Odaat (One day at one day), which offers gamblers and their families, including rehabilitation information, financial consultations and educational videos.
