A suspected hiker who gave some strange answers to a concerned Topanga resident has been questioned and arrested by police … at least according to the guy who confronted him.

We tracked down the Topanga man who recorded his interaction with the hiker, and he joined us on “TMZ Live” Wednesday … telling us the guy stuck out like a sore thumb and raised a ton of red flags.
The resident says his community is pretty tight-knit, so they know everyone… and this guy was clearly not local.
A hiker was on a fire road carrying a backpack that sounded the alarm for a resident … as the confrontation came within the first few days of the Palisades Fire, which has ravaged parts of Malibu and Topanga.

When the rider, without prompting, said had no lighter fluid the resident became even more suspicious of him… and he says he sent the boy in the direction of the fire department, who he hoped could retrieve the boy.
It appears that law enforcement eventually caught the hiker…we know the county sheriff’s department saw the video and the resident says he was told the hiker was arrested and questioned by police.

There are fires associated with these fires, and the resident says there were too many red flags not to ask questions.
She also tells us there was no physical altercation when she put the phone down … and she’s glad her kids are with her, or it could have gotten ugly.
