Hideki Matsuyama finished a PGA Tour record 72 holes of 35 under to beat The Sentry in Hawaii by three shots over Colin Morikawa.
The Japanese snapped the 34 achieved by Cameron Smith to win the same tournament in 2022 as he claimed his 11th PGA Tour title and third in a year.
Matsuyama shot an eight-under 65 at Kapalua on Sunday, his bogey on the fourth seventh, his only shot over the final 59 holes, as he claimed the $3.6 million top prize.
After an eight-foot birdie putt at 18 secured the new PGA Tour record, the 32-year-old said: “I’m so glad it came in.”
Matsuyama birdies the 35th hole or better. he also holed out 107 yards for eagle on the second in his final round; beating Smith’s record three years ago, and Sunja Im at the same spot in 2024.
Morikawa, who started the final round of the opening round trailing Matsuyama, carded a 6-under 67 and his title hopes faded when he made three consecutive bogeys at five and six to record a par and a bogey, respectively.
The American said of Matsuyama, who will now rise to fifth in the world rankings. “He just never gave up today. I just knew I had to stay on top of things and kind of let some slip up on that front nine.
“I played a good back nine, but to win on a course like this, in these conditions, you have to have it for 72 (holes). And I had it for 65.”
I closed with a 65 and tied for third over 29, while Taylor Pendrith secured the albatross, the first on the Plantation course since the 1999 PGA Tour season opener was moved to Kapalua, in fifth place when he teed off. 200 yards.
The Canadian, who finished 13th at 22 under, said: “As soon as I hit it, I knew it was going to be really good (but) I didn’t expect it to come out.
“I didn’t see it go in, but the fans standing by the green went crazy, so yeah, that was a really nice bonus.”
