As the year draws to a close, we look back at the biggest, best and most emotional moments of the 2024 Super League season…
February
The 2024 season started with the most monumental victories of the Super League. Jake Wardle’s converted try was the difference in February as Wigan Warriors cruised to a dramatic 16-12 victory over Penrith Panthers to win the World Club Challenge.
The win saw Wigan crowned club world champions for the fifth time and made the Panthers wait for their first win in the competition since losing at home to St Helens a year earlier thanks to Lewis Dodd’s goal.
“Tonight is the culmination of a lot of hard work, off the court and on the court, and we have to do it again and again now,” Warriors head coach Matt Peat said.
“It’s not just about winning trophies, it’s about getting this place together and standing for something.”
march
It can’t be a season review without it.The Good Friday derby between St Helens and Wigan took place as usual in March, with the rival teams separated by eight miles and one big hill again.
It was a big win for St Helens as they ended Wigan Warriors’ 15-game winning streak with a dramatic 12-4 scoreline, Wigan’s Liam Byrne seeing red for a high tackle on Mark Percival.
“When these games are close and when they are as nail-biting as they are, there is no better scene,” said St Helens head coach Paul Wellens.
“You have to deal with the pressure every now and then, and I thought we did that really well, and in the end, we played hard at the end.”
april
April saw one of Super League’s most valuable managers leave Hull FC after 18 months in charge.Yes, Hull FC parted company with manager Tony Smith by mutual consent on April 11 following a poor start to the Super League season.
The Black and Whites were second-bottom of the table at the time, and this is where they were to end the regular season after all.
“I would like to wish the club and all the players the best of luck for the future,” Smith said in a statement released by the club.
“It’s disappointing not to see the work through what was always going to be a difficult project and I enjoyed the opportunity to see it.
