keep god Sam Moore The famous singer who was one half of the legendary soul duo Sam & Dave has died.
Sam’s rep says the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer died Friday morning in Coral Gables, Fla., after complications from surgery, though the rep did not say what kind of surgery Sam underwent or when.
Sam and Dave – with the singer Dave Prater – formed in the 60’s and released a number of iconic hits including “Soul Man”, “Hold On I’m Coming” and “I Thank You”.
He was discovered singing in church by none other than Sam Cookewho thought Moore would make a great gospel singer, but seeing another soul music icon, Jackie Wilsonmade him switch to pop music instead.
Sam met Dave at a South Florida nightclub talent show and Atlantic Records executives discovered the duo in 1965…and the rest is rock ‘n’ roll history.
They broke up in 1970, but their music catalog took a major hit when And Aykroyd and: John Belushi covered “Soul Man” as the Blues Brothers on “SNL” in the 70s.
Sam talked about his struggle with heroin addiction after marriage Joyce McRae in 1982, and he eventually helped her clean up and blossom into a solo career.She was a favorite at the White House, performing for 6 presidents at various events. Sam was 89. He survives Joycetheir daughter and granddaughter.
