Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher assesses the weekend’s controversial moments, including Andy Robertson’s red card in Liverpool’s 2-2 home draw with Fulham.
“Liverpool” 2-2 “Fulham”.
Incident: Liverpool defender Andy Robertson was shown a straight red card after tripping Harry Wilson to deny an obvious scoring chance.
DERMOTT SAYS: “I’ve had many chances to look at this again, and I didn’t think it was a red card then, and I still don’t.
“Robertson doesn’t know it’s coming, he gets the ball wrong. Does he get the ball first?”
“There are too many variables, and the ‘O’ (in DOGSO – Denial of Goal or Obvious Goal Chance) stands for Obvious and Not Possible.
“Then (Raul) Jimenez takes a shot and the whistle actually goes when (Virgil) Van Dijk clears the ball and that adds a lot of complications to it.
“A yellow card would have been a more pleasant decision.
“If you are going to give a red card, then you whistle, because after the whistle you are in control of the situation. If he thinks it’s a red card, just blow it.
“If the referee had blown the whistle immediately, everyone would have accepted it.”
Wolves 1-2 Ipswich
Incident: An angry Ryan Ait-Nouri is shown a second yellow after the full-time whistle for Molineux before being hauled off, while Wolves team-mate Matheus Cunha argues with a member of the Ipswich backline after the full-time whistle.
DERMOTT SAYS: “The pictures speak volumes and Craig Dawson is doing him (Ait-Nouri) a huge favor because he is very angry because it could have turned into almost anything.
“No doubt the FA will be looking at (Cunha’s tackle) this morning. He elbowed a guy in the back of the head and then took his glasses and that’s not the reaction you expect from a player.”
“Manchester City” 1-2 “Manchester United”.
Incident: Manchester United striker Rasmus Hoylund and Manchester City defender Kyle Walker were both booked.
DERMOTT SAYS: “It wasn’t a good advertisement for football, you shouldn’t do that (going down like Walker).
“I thought the referee (Anthony Taylor) did well, he didn’t think it was any bigger than that.
It was just a push. It was a player responding to a push, but we don’t need that.”
Incident: Manchester United missed a penalty after Hoylund was brought down by a challenge from Ruben Diaz.
DERMOTT SAYS: “I still don’t think it’s a penalty, I really don’t.
“The defender goes to play the ball, Hojlund sees it coming and goes over him and it looks a lot worse in slow motion.
“I think Hojlund was happy to go down and not interested in running after the ball.”
“Chelsea” 2-1 “Brentford”.
Incident: Chelsea defender Mark Cucurella received a second yellow card after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge and was sent off.
DERMOTT SAYS: “At the end of the game, everyone was pushing and shoving, and Cukurella was taking an aggressive stance.
“He only got a yellow card a minute ago, so he should have known better really.”
“Nottingham Forest” 2-1 “Aston Villa”.
Incident: Aston Villa were denied a penalty after VAR ruled Elliott Anderson’s arm-stretching on Morgan Rodgers was a “passing catch”.
DERMOTT SAYS: “I think it’s a foul (by Rodgers on Anderson before he breaks into the box) and he (Anderson) then catches him going into the box.
“I think it’s a penalty, but I think the best outcome here is in fairness for the referee to go to the monitor so he’s open to all options. Then he’d see Rodgers rip his (Anderson’s) jersey. his back and he can then take a free kick to (Forrest).
“You got the same net result without the penalty, but people take it better because it actually happened.”
Incident: Nottingham Forest’s winner against Aston Villa stands despite a potential foul on Matty Cash.
DERMOTT SAYS: “Depending on who you talk to, some people think it’s a foul, some don’t, I’d say you can’t reschedule football matches.
“The referee is in a good position and says it’s no foul and no play and certainly not for VAR. If you get in the way, you’ll be watching every incident that happens on the field.
“I don’t think it’s a foul, I think he wins the ball. I don’t think it’s a clear and obvious mistake.”
