Rafael Nadal lost to Bottic van de Zandshulp in the Davis Cup final on Tuesday in the final match of the Spaniard’s career.
Nadal retires from professional tennis after the team match in Malaga and will not be able to play again if Spain lose their second singles match against the Netherlands later.
In the other singles, Carlos Alcaraz will face Talon Grixpur and if the Wimbledon champion can make it a best-of-three series, Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers will face Van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhoff in the deciding doubles.
Van de Zandschulp said: “The crowd was tough. It is clear. This is what it’s like to play against Rafa in Spain. He’s the greatest athlete to ever live here. It is a truly unique event.
“It’s hard to close the match against him. Knowing it might be his last … I just went for it and it helped in the end.”
