SALAR DE ATACAMA, CHILE - AUGUST 24: A lithium mine manager inspects an evaporation pond for lithium-rich brine in the Atacama Desert on August 24, 2022 in Salar de Atacama, Chile. Albemarle Corporation, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, is expanding mining operations at its Salar plant to meet rising global demand for lithium carbonate, a key component in the manufacture of batteries, increasingly for electric vehicles. To extract the lithium, natural brine is pumped from beneath the salt to a series of evaporation wells. During an 18-month process, the liquid moved through 15 ponds, eventually turning from blue to yellow with a lithium concentration of 6 percent. It is then transported to an Albemarle chemical plant in Antofagasta, where it is turned into battery-grade lithium carbonate powder and shipped internationally. The evaporation process produces large quantities of salt by-products, many of which are reprocessed and sold. Chile is the second largest producer of lithium in the world, after Australia. The phone you’re reading this article on is probably taking a lot of damage on the planet. If it’s an iPhone, more than 30 kilograms of minerals had to be mined to collect the metals inside it, from the nickel and cobalt in its battery to the rare earths in the touch screen.

Higher volumes of such “critical metals”…
