Daniel Jones has been released by the New York Giants after losing his starting quarterback job.
Jones, who was the third-string quarterback behind Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock during the Giants’ bye, signed a four-year, $160 million contract in 2022 that included a $23 million injury guarantee and would kick in if he was injured the rest of the season :
The Giants have won just two of their 10 games this season, including losing their last five.
Giants president John Mara said Friday. “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would let him go. We mutually agreed it would be best for him and the team.
“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization. His attitude in this situation yesterday was just that.
“We’re all disappointed with how things turned out.
“We hold Daniel in high regard and are very grateful. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Jones, who is now free to sign with any team, went 24-44-1 as a starter in New York after being selected sixth overall in the 2019 draft.
Most of those wins came in 2022, when the Giants went 9-7-1 and swept Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs.
But New York is 1-5 in Jones’ injury-plagued campaign through six starts in 2023. Jones has completed just 63 percent of his passes this season with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, with the Giants last in the NFL in scoring. in quantity.
“Definitely not happy about it,” said Jones, who read a 90-second statement before taking questions from reporters after losing the starting role.
“Not what you want to hear, but at the end of the day, this is football. We’re in a business where you’re expected to deliver, and we weren’t doing that.”
