In the past two years, submarine cables from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean have been cut in acts of apparent sabotage. Now a NATO-backed project has shown how to quickly restore critical communications via satellite.
$2.5 million first showing THE THIEF the project – short for Hybrid Space-submarine Architecture Ensuring Infosec of Telecommunications – was completed in Sweden on January 16. This test simulated how quickly the software could connect outgoing data communications to available satellite Internet providers, for example SpaceX’s Starlink and Viasat.
