“I had great meetings with the senators yesterday,” Gaetz wrote in a post about X. “I appreciate their feedback – and the overwhelming support of so many. While the push was strong, it is clear that my assertion was becoming an unfair distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no need to drag out a Washington feud, so I will withdraw my name. Trump’s To serve as Attorney General must be considered on Day 1.”
“I remain fully committed to seeing that Donald J. Trump is the most successful president in history,” Gaetz added. “I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I am confident that he will save America.”
Gaetz informed Trump early Thursday that he was retiring, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.
