Matt Bloomfield has left promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers to become the new manager of Luton.
Bloomfield has joined the Championship club on a three-and-a-half-year deal, leaving Wycombe in League Two and two points behind leaders Birmingham.
The 40-year-old replaces Rob Edwards, who left Luton by mutual consent last week after just over two years in charge.
Edwards took the club to the Premier League in 2023 but was unable to keep them and struggled to adapt to life in the Championship with seven wins from 26 matches to leave them two points above the relegation zone.
Luton said they “met all of Wycombe’s compensation requirements” to sign Bloomfield, who brought in his assistant Richard Thomas, first-team coach Lee Harrison and senior analyst Ben Searne.
Bloomfield will take charge of Saturday’s Championship home match against Preston North End.
Bloomfield said: “It is a real honor and privilege to be here, to be appointed manager of this incredible club.
“I’m really, really proud. It’s been a busy couple of days, but I’ve met the recruiting team, met Gary and spent some time with the board.
“The fact that they are all Luton fans and that they care so much about their football club and that they were really keen for me to join our football club shone through as well, so I’m incredibly proud. and I’m very, very happy to be here.
“It made me feel very comfortable and very wanted, which is huge for me. I want to work with people who care, and fans who care, and they certainly do here I have worked with people who want the best for their football club and this is more than evident with Gary, the chairman and the board of directors.
“The feeling they’ve given me and the feeling of being wanted, how much research they’ve done on me and the football team we’ve built at Colchester and Wycombe and the knowledge base of what I stand for, who I am. . and what we’ve tried to produce in our football team, it didn’t leave me in uncertain times that this was the right move at the right time.”
Bloomfield made more than 500 appearances as a midfielder for Wycombe over 19 years. He took over as manager in February 2023 after five months at Colchester and scored 87 points during 2024, scoring 107 goals in all competitions and reaching the final of the EFL Trophy.
Luton chief executive Gary Sweet added: “It is with great pleasure and excitement that we can announce the appointment of Matt on a long-term contract.
“First of all I’d like to thank Wycombe for their cooperation in ensuring a quick and smooth transition. It may be flattering to be on the receiving end, but we’ve made sure we’ve gone above and beyond.” to compensate Wycombe for securing his services along with his trusted coaching staff.
“Over the years as a club we have progressed through the EFL, we have met Matt every step of the way as a respected captain of his team and together they have always shared our hunger and desire to improve and reach the next level.
“Since returning to Wycombe, we’ve been hugely impressed with his work in getting them back to the top of League One, and especially how they’ve done it in such an entertaining way, building a reputation for attacking football up front.
“We have identified Matt’s personal and team qualities as the best candidate to fit the culture we have long established here at Luton Town and I am sure all the supporters will join me in congratulating him, along with Richard, Lee and Ben. to Kenilworth Road.
“Finally, I’d like to thank the enormous amount of work and detail our recruitment team put into identifying the best candidate and impressing them in meetings, with fantastic and unanimous support from the board as always. Making a quick decision after interviewing Matt.”
