Sky Sports Pundits Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp have assessed Marcus Rashford’s current situation at Man Utd, after the forward was again left out of Ruben Amorim’s squad to face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.
It was the second game in a row that the 27-year-old has missed since he was absent from Sunday’s 2-1 Manchester derby win at the Etihad Stadium.
Rashford’s departure from the squad comes after Rashford admitted he was “ready for a new challenge” in an interview with journalist Henry Winter.
Neville, Carragher and Redknapp discussed the situation live Sky Sports Thursday night – here’s what they had to say…
Neville: I suspect behind the scenes it gets pretty tough
Gary Neville.
“Maybe it’s been a feeling over the last few months that’s trying to get me to think that this can all work itself out because I don’t think academy players who have great talent like Marcus Rashford should ever leave the club. :
“It’s one of those things where you want to see players who have been there since the age of eight stay there forever. But in the last few days it’s gotten to a point where it might be the end of it for both sides. and maybe over pretty quickly if it goes this way.
“Who knows, it might work itself out. Reuben Amorim is saying the right things, but I suspect it’s getting pretty tough behind the scenes right now.
“That’s two times he hasn’t been in the team. He’s been one of Manchester United’s star players for a few years. Actions speak louder than words, though Amorim says he has a future too doesn’t have one in the team, so things aren’t going so well.
“It’s sad because United had an incredible win on Sunday, but the defeat took away from the win because after a few days the talk is all about that, not really about Ruben Amorim scoring a sensational win.
Butter. The interview put Manchester United in a bad negotiating position
Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher.
“I feel like I’ve been talking about Marcus Rashford for the last week, and I’ve said before that he’s not as good a player as we’ve been talking about him. It’s been Wayne Rooney, it’s been Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I’m not in favor of any player coming out and criticizing the club, but for Rashford to come out without the club’s knowledge and just announce that he’s made a transfer request or wants to leave, that leaves the club really bad in a position to negotiate his departure at some stage.
“If he really believes that he still wants to be a Manchester United player and he still wants to have a great career, you don’t make statements like that. Little chance.
“People keep talking about 30 goals, which is really out of this world. We’re looking at some players now, they’re doing better than that and he’s at Manchester United, a top team that’s very dominant. : games.
“Manchester United should have a player who scores 30 goals every season. If they play 55 to 60 games, if you have a player who can’t score 30 goals, he probably shouldn’t be at Manchester United.”
Rashford did Amorim a favor by showing his cards early
Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp.
“In a way he’s done Amorim a favour. He’s shown his cards too early, which doesn’t always help from a negotiating point of view, because if Marcus Rashford leaves, the fact that he wants to leave doesn’t help. when you want to get money.
“I don’t think Amorim had preconceived ideas. Rashford started in the first game against Ipswich, he scored a goal and a few people were saying:
“But Amorim knows that we don’t see him every day, seeing how he practices, seeing how he lives his life, seeing how he behaves in and around the locker room, seeing the role model he is to be. players, and he clearly doesn’t think he’s the right person to want around.
“You don’t leave a great player out of your team. That’s not what you do. If he doesn’t buy what Ruben Amorim wants, he’s a surplus. It would probably be the best thing for Marcus now, he said himself, to leave.
“Does that mean he can’t stay? Of course he did. In 2010, Wayne Rooney signed a new contract. But Marcus has to change because he definitely has talent.
“Form is one thing. Anyone can have bad times, but I think what’s worrying for the club is his attitude on the pitch. We saw that at times when he wasn’t running and that’s my biggest fear for him :
“Somehow he has to fall back in love with the game. You’re incredibly lucky to be playing at this level. It’s a sad situation to see, because there’s no doubt he’s got talent way he has. He has to fall back in love with the game and enjoy it because at the moment he seems to be playing football under duress.”
