Luke Littler has joined an exclusive club with 10 titles in one year but sees no reason why he can’t claim an 11th when he heads to the World Darts Championships.
After Littler’s sensational victory on his Grand Slam debut, beating Martin Luckmann 16-3 in straight sets, he joined an exclusive club of only Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor and Peter Wright in the same season won trophies by double digits.
He now travels to Alexandra Palace as the favorite to lift the trophy on January 3 and believes his form is good enough to prove the predictions right.
“I could have finished the year at 11, right? But yeah, I set another record,” Littler said.
“I put my name among the other players who have won ten titles this year. But, as I said, next year it could be 11 and I will try to break the record.
“I got runner-up in the first round, but yeah, I’d like to win it. Obviously, everyone wants to win it, but that’s why my game is right. I think I can win it.
“I’d love to win the trophy, but if not, just another good run to the final.”
With the teenage sensation breaking records left, right and centre, many see Littler winning, becoming the youngest player to ever be crowned world champion.
The 17-year-old believes time is on his side to end that record.
“Well, I know Michael Van Gerwen holds the youngest at 24, so I’ve got seven years,” Littler said.
“I could only grin for six years and then win it when I’m 24.
“But no, I’d obviously like to win it before Michael does. That would mean everything. So to be the youngest, that’s what I’d definitely be looking for.”
When Littler began his sensational run in December 2023, not many could have predicted how prominently he would begin life on the professional darts circuit.
Indeed, even he can’t quite believe how much success he’s had in his debut year, his early victory at the Bahrain Masters, in which he shot a nine-putt, spurring him on.
“I just wanted to win some Pro Tours, but obviously winning in Bahrain, the World Series, and then it was just European Tours, Pro Tours and just all the titles that I’ve taken. It just shows how good I am me.” “I was playing,” he added.
“It was good to win in Bahrain, the first tournament of 2024. I put my hands on it and I just had to build from there and that’s what I did.”
