Trent Alexander-Arnold’s lackluster performance against Manchester United was influenced by Real Madrid’s latest bid, says Jamie Carragher.
The Liverpool right-back, who has been heavily linked with Real Madrid this week, had a game to forget as United let the Premier League leaders out of contention. “In Anfield”: 2-2 Super Sunday!.
Alexander-Arnold, now in the final six months of his contract at his boyhood club, struggled to impose himself and was at fault for the visitors’ first goal.
“I thought he was really poor,” Carragher said. “The game couldn’t have been much worse for him, you always have to focus on him.
“I expected him to have the kind of game he’s shown so often, where he dominates the game at right-back. I felt Manchester United’s system would play into his hands and there would be plenty of room for that. head up and make crosses.
“I thought he would think about how everyone was talking negatively about him and that he had a really great game. He was bad defensively, but there was nothing going forward with the ball.
“Only he knows if the rumors have affected him, but the fact that he was so poor in the first game after Real’s offer tells me it must have affected him.”
Alexander-Arnold was eventually substituted, replaced by deputy right-back Conor Bradley, late in the game and Gary Neville He asked if Real’s “offensive” offer played a role.
“I think that Real Madrid’s offer is a bad time for him,” said Neville.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen, whether he’s going to leave Liverpool and go to Real Madrid or not, but if you make it to the big game, you’re a local boy too, it’s not going to be easy, the distractions of having all that hype :
Real Madrid are a hell of a lot. I thought it was insulting, to be honest. They act like that sometimes, they think they can get what they want.
“Liverpool are a huge football club. They’re never going to sell Trent Alexander-Arnold for £20m in January, so you’re going to hit the mickey a bit. I think he’ll probably regret it this week.
“Some guys see Liverpool and Manchester United as part of their career. It’s great and they love it, but they want to explore.
“When I look at Trent, he seems like a guy who wants to go and discover Real Madrid. He wants to go and play in different parts of the world.”
Trent for Tranmere?
Roy Keane suggested Alexander-Arnold should move to Tranmere rather than Real Madrid after criticizing his “schoolboy” defending against Manchester United.
Analyzing Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hoylund’s chances after questionable defending, Keane said: “It’s too easy. We talk about how brilliant Trent is going forward, but Trent defends today. Oh my god, it’s like school.
“There’s talk of him going to Real Madrid, the way he’s defending, he’s going to Tranmere Rovers after this. He’s got to do better.”
