The NBA has postponed the Los Angeles Lakers’ home game against the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday due to several wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area.
It’s the second day a game in downtown Los Angeles has been postponed. The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings were scheduled to host the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night.
The date of the rescheduled games will be announced later. The Kings said tickets for the rescheduled game against Calgary will be good for the rescheduled date.
At least five wildfires are raging in Los Angeles, fueled by strong winds of up to 100 mph, killing five people and ordering 180,000 to evacuate their homes.
The fires are consuming about 45 square miles (117 square kilometers), roughly the size of San Francisco. The Palisades Fire is already the most destructive in Los Angeles’ history.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick, who lives in the Palisades area, addressed the threat at home before Tuesday’s 118-97 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
“I just want to acknowledge and send thoughts and prayers to everyone in Palisades right now,” Reddick said at the time. “I live there, my family and my wife’s family, my wife’s twin sister evacuated.
“I know a lot of people are scared, including my family. So I just want to accept that everyone is safe.”
“Our hearts go out to Los Angeles. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this unimaginable situation. And our gratitude goes out to all of you who are coming together when we need each other the most.” We are, Los Angeles.
Lakers star LeBron James took to social media earlier in the week to say he was “praying for everyone” in the area.
Vikings-Rams traveled to Los Angeles despite the fires, but the plan remained in place
The Minnesota Vikings’ playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams has yet to be played at SoFi Stadium in California, but a contingency plan is in place due to the many wildfires that continue to burn around Los Angeles.
The Rams sent a statement to season ticket holders and fans on Thursday morning reiterating that Monday night’s game remains as scheduled.
The NFL said Wednesday night that if the game has to be moved, it will be played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals.
In 2003, the league moved the Monday night regular season game between the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona due to wildfires.
The Rams and Los Angeles Chargers both practice in fire-free areas, but both teams monitor air quality and its potential impact on their practices.
The Chargers changed their practice schedule on Wednesday, minimizing their players’ outdoor time in coastal El Segundo.
After practice on Thursday, the Chargers travel to Houston for an AFC wild-card game against the Texans on Saturday.
