Those in immediate danger are residents within 25 miles of a wildfire, according to Dr. Zab Mosenifar, a pulmonary specialist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Small particles in the air can travel hundreds of kilometers, and depending on the winds, the particles can float for two weeks after the fire is extinguished, Mosenifar warned.

Children, the elderly and people with chronic respiratory problems are especially at risk, said Mosenifar.

“Inhalation of smoke, particulates and particulates in high concentrations and/or over long periods of time can cause short-term or long-term lung damage,” said ABC News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton.

“People who smoke, vape or have asthma are at a higher risk of developing problems,” Ashton said.

“I recommend that anyone in the area wear an N95 respirator if possible,” he added.

Ashton urged residents with persistent coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing or chest tightness to seek medical attention and wear eye protection.

“If your eyes hurt or your vision is impaired, seek medical attention immediately and do not rub your eyes, as this can cause further damage,” he said.

Mosenifar advised residents to use an air filter at home or install an air conditioner to recirculate the air.
