Josh Gad had to put on a show for the comedy legend… revealing that he was nominated Mel Brooks through the recent Star Wars sequels while preparing the sequel to Spaceballs.
The actor told about this in the last episode of the series “Let’s talk off camera” podcast that has been hosted Kelly Ripa … explaining that Mel is very involved in the Spaceballs sequel.
Gad says that when they pitched their initial concept, Mel told them that he needed them to explain the latest films to him… and asked Gad not to leave out any details.
JJ says he then launched into a 40-minute explanation… likening himself to a combat vet going to war one-on-one; sweating profusely, nailing every line and beat and explaining every comedic bit.
Gad says that when he finished, Mel told him that “you really seem to have your finger on the pulse.”
Gad was rumored to be writing and starring in a sequel to The Spaceballs earlier this year … and in November, Gad confirmed that they had already completed the first draft of the script.
If you don’t know, the original Spaceballs was released in 1987 and satirized the Star Wars universe Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, John Candy, Rick Moranis and Brooks himself. .

It looks like the new sequel has Brooks’ blessing… and with Gad’s performance, he’s already seen what it could be like.
