The Yankees will go without next season Juan SotoBut fear not, New York fans… Johnny Damon tells TMZ Sports they might just be better without the star slugger!!
We caught up with the 51-year-old former Pinstripes player on Thursday, hours after the Mets introduced Soto to their fan base, and he was quick to say that his former team could do well.
His justification. Damon says the Yankees can now take the $750 million they budgeted for Soto and spend it on a number of key pieces that could make them even more formidable in 2025.
“The Yankees could get away with this ball,” the two-time World Series champion said.
The Yankees, of course, have already spent big going after Soto to the Mets, signing … inking the former Braves pitcher. Max Fried $218 million deal.
And Damon says he fully expects the team to keep writing checks … maybe even to the coveted Mets free agent. Pete Alonso.
“I think at the end of the day,” Damon said, “you’re going to have a better team.”
Don’t worry, Mets fans … Damon says he still expects big things from him in Queens, though he warns New York fans that his numbers could be down because of his new league and ballpark.
