Joe Root will return to one-day cricket for England’s tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, but Ben Stokes has been ruled out through injury.
Brendan McCullum’s first squads as England white-ball coach have been revealed ahead of next month’s tour of India, which includes three ODIs, five IT20s and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February and March.
Yorkshire batter Root, who has not played ODI cricket since the November 2023 World Cup, returns in an ODI capacity only.
England Test captain Stokes has not been considered for selection as he continues to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered against New Zealand earlier this month.
Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethel has been named in both squads after impressing with bat and ball in England’s Test series win in New Zealand.
Leicestershire leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed joins the IT20 squad but there was no place for Sam Curran or Rhys Topley for McCullum’s first tour and tournament in charge of England’s white-ball side.
England’s touring party leaves for India on January 17 ahead of the first IT20 in Kolkata on January 22.
