Iga Swiatek: World no 1 hires Naomi Osaka’s former coach Wim Fissette | Tennis News

Iga Sviatek has hired a new coach, Naomi Osaka’s former coach, Belgian Wim Fiset.

The Wprld No1 announced two weeks ago that he had split from Tomasz Wiktorovski after three hugely successful years together in which they won four grand slam titles.

The news came shortly after Naomi Osaka ended her partnership with Fiset, and Sviatek reached out to the 44-year-old.

Fiset has established a reputation as a leading coach on the WTA Tour, having previously worked with Kim Clijsters, Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Johanna Konta and Angelique Kerber.

Swiatek made a post on social networks.

“I am pleased to announce that Wim Fiset is joining our team. As you know, I am preparing for the WTA Finals, but my perspective is, as always, long-term, not short-term.

“I have said many times that my career is a marathon for me, not a sprint, and I work, act and make decisions with this approach. I want to say that I am very excited and looking forward to working with Vim.

“He seems to have a great attitude, vision and a lot of experience at a very high level of tennis. It’s always important to try and get to know each other better, but we’re off to a good start and I’m looking forward to racing. soon.”

Sviatek won his fourth French Open title in June but failed to get past the quarter-finals at other grand slams and hopes Fisset will help him improve his results away from clay.

He first linked up with Osaka ahead of the 2020 season and guided him to the pinnacle of the game as the Japanese star won the US Open and Australian Open titles.

While Osaka was away from having her first child on tour, Fiset briefly worked with China’s Zheng Qinwen, but it ended sadly when the Belgian decided to return to the Osaka team ahead of his return.

However, her progress was not as fast as she had hoped, and she decided to part ways with Fisset and hire former Serena Williams coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Sviatek missed the Asian swing amid the coaching change and will return to action next month at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where she faces a battle with Aryna Sabalenka for the No.1 ranking.
