How to use progesterone
Before you consider using progesterone, it is important to understand that it is not a magic bullet and that you will benefit more by implementing a bioenergetic nutritional approach that allows you to efficiently burn glucose as your primary fuel without relying on electrons in the mitochondria. This will reduce your energy production. My new book, “Your Guide to Cellular Health: Unlocking the Science of Long-Term Happiness” covers this process in detail.
Once dialed in your diet, an effective strategy to help prevent excess estrogen is transmucosal progesterone (meaning it’s applied to your gums, not orally or transdermally), which is a natural estrogen antagonist. Progesterone is one of four hormones that I believe many adults can benefit from. (The other three are thyroid hormone T3, DHEA, and pregnenolone.)
I don’t recommend transdermal progesterone, as your skin expresses high levels of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which causes a significant portion of the progesterone you take to be converted to allopregnanolone, which cannot be converted back to progesterone.
The best way to manage progesterone
Please note that when progesterone is used topically on your gums, the FDA believes it is somehow considered a drug and prohibits any company from giving that advice on the label. This is why companies like Health Natara advertise their progesterone products as “subjective”.
However, please be aware that it is perfectly legal for any physician to prescribe an off-label medication to a patient. In this case, progesterone is a natural hormone, not a drug, and is very safe even in high doses. This is different from the synthetic progesterone used by drug companies, but often and incorrectly.
Dr. Ray Peet did seminal work in progesterone and was probably the world’s greatest expert on progesterone. He wrote his Ph.D. In the year on estrogen in 1982 and spent most of his professional career documenting the importance of preventing excess estrogen with low-LA diets and transmucosal progesterone supplementation.
He determined that most fluids do not dissolve progesterone well and discovered that vitamin E is the best solvent to deliver progesterone in your tissue. Vitamin E also protects you from damage from LA. You have to be very careful about which vitamin E you use because most of the vitamin E supplements on the market are useless and will not harm you.
It is very important to avoid using any synthetic vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol Acetate – indicates that the acetate is synthetic). Natural vitamin E is labeled “d alpha tocopherol”. This is the pure D isomer, which your body can use.
Other vitamin E isomers also exist and require the full spectrum of tocopherols and tocotrienols, particularly the beta, gamma and delta types, in the effective D isomer. As an example of suitable vitamin E, you can see the label on vitamin E in our store. You can use any brand name with the same label.
You can buy pharmaceutical grade bioidentical progesterone such as Progesterone Powder, Bioidentical Micronized Powder, 10 grams for $40 at many online stores like Amazon. This is a one-year supply based on the amount you choose.
However, since 1/64 of a teaspoon is 25 mg and 1/32 teaspoon is 50 mg, you will need to purchase a small stainless steel measuring spoon. A standard dose is typically 25-50 mg. And take it 30 minutes before going to sleep, because it has an anti-cortisol effect and increases the level of GABA for good sleep.
Unfortunately, this supplier often runs out of product, and if so, you can use it. Simply Progesterone by Health Natura. It is pre-mixed with vitamin E and MCT oil. Again, while Health Natara states that the product is for “local use only,” I recommend applying it transmucosally by massaging it into your gums.
If you are a menstruating woman, you should take progesterone during the luteal phase, or the last half of the cycle; This can be determined by starting 10 days after your period and stopping progesterone when your period starts.
If you’re a man or a woman who doesn’t menstruate, you can take progesterone every day for four to six months and cycle for one week. The best time of day to take progesterone is 30 minutes before bed because it has anti-cortisol action and increases GABA levels for better sleep.
This is what I personally have been getting very good results for over a year now. I am a doctor so I have no problem doing this. If you are not a doctor, you should consult one before using this therapy, as transmucosal progesterone therapy requires a doctor’s prescription.
