Senator Mark Kelly brought up specific allegations of public intoxication against Hegseth during the veterans’ nonprofit.

The Arizona Democrat and veteran asked Hegseth to answer “truth or lie” to the allegations, which include serving drunken duties.

Hegseth repeatedly responded by calling them “anonymous scumbags.”

Sen. Mark Kelly questions Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, during Hegseth’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Capitol Hill, on 14, 2025, in Washington.

Kelly ended his tenure by accusing Hegseth of misleading the board and the country about his personal challenges.

“It’s hard to square this circle,” Kelly said. “Which is it? Have you overcome personal problems or are you the target of a publicity campaign? It can’t be both. It’s clear to me that you’re not being honest with us or the American people because you know the truth would be disqualifying for the job.”
