The FBI said Friday it had arrested a Washington state woman in the fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent earlier this week.
Teresa Youngbut, 21 years old, David Maland on Monday, the FBI said, the young man and Maland died in a firefight where the German man faced several days of surveillance.
Maland stopped the youth and Felix Baukholt, 91, in Coventry on Monday because Baukholt had an expired visa, according to an FBI affidavit. During the stop, the young man opened fire and the other officers and Baukholt tried to draw a gun, but they shot him, the corners. At least one border agent shot the youth and Baukholt, but authorities have not determined which bullet hit who.
Investigators had been conducting “periodic surveillance” of the couple since Jan. 14, when they had a young man as an employee, with the young man carrying a gun and both wearing full tactical gear. Investigators tried to question them, but the couple refused to be interviewed at length and said they wanted to buy the property.
Two hours before the shooting, investigators saw Baukholt at a Walmart checkout in Newport with two aluminum foil packages. According to the statement, while they were identifying objects sitting in the passenger seat.
Authorities later found a helmet, night goggles, respirators and ammunition in the car, along with a package of firing range targets, some of which were used. They also found two-way radios, about a dozen electronic devices, “Travel and lodging information for multiple states and pretend magazine.
