Eugenio Derbez backs off his harsh criticism Selena GomezEmilia Perez’s performance in the new Netflix musical film … with an official apology from the actress.
ICYMI … the “CODA” star recently appeared on the Spanish-language podcast “Hablando de Cine” where he torn On Selena’s attempt to speak Spanish in the movie, calling it “indefensible.”
Selena, who is not a native speaker of Spanish, responded to Eugenio’s criticism … and surprisingly apologized, writing on TikTok … “I understand where you are coming from. I did my best with time. It doesn’t take away how much work and heart I put into this film.”
The actress’ humble response obviously got back to Eugenio, who has since served his own mea culpa.
in the email uploaded to TikTok:Eugenio called his comments on the podcast “careless” and “indefensible”.
He added… “(They) go against what I stand for. As Latinos, we have to support each other. There is no excuse. I was wrong and I admire your career deeply and with your kind heart.”
As Eugenio continued, he advocated that “Emilia Perez” should be mentioned and hoped that his unkind words would not diminish the film’s success.
While Eugenio may not have been a fan of the film to begin with, the Jacques Audiard-directed film is already garnering quite a bit of awards buzz, some even for Selena.
In fact, just last week Selena took home the Spotlight Award IndieWire Honors for his work on Emilia Perez.
So it’s safe to say that one bad review won’t hurt a film’s awards season chances.
