A brace from James McAtee saw England to a 2-1 win over Ukraine in a European U21 Championship qualifier at the Vitality Stadium.
Taras Mihavko opened the scoring for the visitors in the 70th minute from a corner, before Makati’s free-kick and extra-time winner saw Ben Futcher’s men claim the points.
The result saw second-placed England close the gap on their rivals to two points at the top of Group F.
England squandered a golden chance after 20 minutes when Ipswich’s Liam Delap miscued Ukraine goalkeeper Ruslan Nescheret and the loose ball found McAtee whose powerful effort was blocked.
The Young Lions struggled in the first half, frustrated by Ukraine’s press as they tried to play from behind.
Lewis Hall made a smart run down the left, but despite an elusive move from Omari Hutchinson, his first-time effort went over the crossbar.
Delap looked to continue his rich run of form from the Premier League after playing for McAtee, but the forward’s effort clipped the crossbar.
England improved after the break but they still couldn’t break the deadlock as Jayden Filogen fired an effort straight at Nescheret.
The hosts were punished for poor finishing in the 70th minute when Ukraine took the lead. A corner was misjudged by goalkeeper James Trafford as Mijavko rose highest to head home the opener.
McAtee’s persistence paid off as his free-kick on the edge of the area hit the post and in before he slotted home the loose ball to seal the points.
