Boris Johnson says President-elect Donald Trump was “quite tough” on Vladimir Putin the last time he was in the Oval Office. But this time, his longtime political ally is worried that freedom and democracy are at greater risk globally: the former UK prime minister said Trump has advisers who have been whispering in the Russian dictator’s ear.
Speaking at Fortune’s Global Forum conference on Monday, Johnson warned that the Republican party has “a weird homoerotic fascination with Putin that I personally don’t share.”
“Some of these people think he’s totally a stand-up guy and they love his Christianity,” he said. “It’s complete nonsense. He’s a tyrant and a kleptocrat and a murderer and very, very dangerous and evil.”
“But there’s no question that some of these people are in the ear of the 47th president, and they’re telling him a lot of absolute nonsense.”
British politicians accused Prime Minister Viktor Orban of doing the same. “There’s a lot of dangerous, poisonous, harmful debate going on right now,” Johnson added. “I hope and I hope and I hope that this argument will not succeed, and I hope that the argument for democracy and freedom will succeed, and I base my optimism on what I saw last time.”
Johnson is, of course, referring to Trump’s proposed peace deal. The billionaire president Boomerang has repeatedly said that he will end the war in Ukraine that has lasted for more than two and a half years.within 24 hours” should be reinstalled in the White House.
The Kremlin has it He denied the media reports Trump reportedly had a call with Putin in which he warned the Russian president about escalating the war in Ukraine.
In any case, Johnson stressed that “there is a real risk of making an agreement that is not in the interests of freedom and democracy”.
“I am absolutely convinced that it would be a disaster for the world if Ukraine went down,” he added. “However, I cling to the memory of Trump when he was in office, where he was really tough on Putin.”
“So look, I’m putting it out there. (If) anyone is in contact with the president-elect, this is a golden opportunity to show that the previous administration has been weak, because it has not given Ukrainians the provisions they need.”
luck Trump has been contacted for comment.
