Dolphins may use their teeth to hear underwater

Bottlenose dolphins have teeth unlike many other mammals

A study of the anatomy of dolphins’ jaws suggests that their teeth may act as antennae for sound waves, which may help explain how they hear and use underwater echolocation.

“Our findings support the hypothesis that dolphins use their teeth as part of an advanced sound-receiving system,” he says. Ryo Kodera at Tsurumi University in Japan. “This discovery provides insight into how helpful dentition can be for dolphins’ underwater life.”
