Conor Benn could challenge Mario Barrios for the WBC middleweight world title.
The son of British boxing legend Nigel Benn has been banned from boxing in the UK after failing two drug tests in 2022.
Last month, the Independent Anti-Doping Commission lifted Ben’s provisional suspension, saying it was “not satisfied” that UKAD had proved the 28-year-old had committed a doping offence.
UKAD and the British Boxing Board did not appeal the lifting of his suspension.
Ranked No. 2 on the WBC welterweight contenders list, Benn will be chasing WBC champion Barrios unless he is secured a fierce matchup with Chris Eubank Jr.
The WBC would support that fight.
WBC president Mauricio Suleiman said Sky Sports“I’ve had contact with him, we’ve been very open and he deserves to fight for the world title and I hope he does it soon.
“He has been on the waiting list for a long time, we have kept him on the right classification.
“We’ve been very clear and precise. Conor Benn had a process under (the WBC’s) Clean Boxing program where he was completely exonerated and found not guilty.
“We made a very extensive analysis with very important experts in the case and gave the verdict.”
Ben had said before Sky Sports“Hopefully we can get Barrios to fight, if it’s not Eubank next. Fight Barrios for the WBC title in February, March. I’m just excited to be back.
“I’m here now. I’ve stayed in the gym. I’m happy to give the British public the fights they want. Whether it’s a world title, I’m a fighter and I’ve proven that in the last two years.” how much of a warrior am i?
“I’ve shown more commitment, grit and discipline in the last two years than I have in my entire career.”
