Aston Martin has appointed Andy Cowell as team principal after sacking Mike Krek in an organizational restructuring role.
Former Mercedes engine guru Cowell joined the team as group chief executive in October last year, but has now also been named team chief executive.
Kreck, who has been Aston Martin’s team principal since 2022, will become chief track officer as part of changes that split their aerodynamics, engineering and performance departments into separate track- and campus-based operations.
Aston Martin, which has moved to a new campus at Silverstone in 2023, said the changes were designed to “transition to clarity of leadership and a smoother structure” and help it achieve its “mission to become a championship-winning outfit”.
“I’ve spent the last three months understanding and evaluating our work and I’ve been incredibly impressed with the dedication, commitment and hard work of this team,” said Cowell, who is the mastermind behind the engines that have helped Mercedes win eight consecutive constructors’ championships. for: degrees from 2014 to 2021.
“With the completion of the AMR Technology Campus and our transition to a full works team in 2026, together with our strategic partners Honda and Aramco, we are on our way to becoming a championship team.
“These organizational changes are a natural evolution of the multi-year plans we’ve set out to deliver, and I’m incredibly excited about the future.”
The statement also confirmed that Enrico Cardile will take over the role of chief technical officer, which was signed in July last year, with the Italian having just been allowed to take up the job after taking gardening leave following his departure from Ferrari.
Aston Martin’s announcement made no mention of legendary designer Adrian Newey, who will join the team as a technical partner after leaving Red Bull in March.
The team’s statement reads: “The AMR Technology Campus-based team will be led by the team’s new Chief Technical Officer, Enrico Cardil, with the team now able to focus 100 percent of its time on the competitive ingenuity challenge of creating the new race car. Enrico will oversee the architecture, design and construction of the new race cars.”
Tom McCullough, who previously led the track’s operations under the title of director of performance, will remain “in the role of group principal, where he will play a critical role in expanding the team’s broader range of racing categories.”
The changes come after Aston Martin took a step back in 2024 following an encouraging campaign in 2023. While they finished both campaigns fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll’s points total dropped from 280 to 94. :
Aston Martin has made no secret of its hopes of becoming title contenders, especially when a new generation of engine and design regulations are introduced to the sport in 2026.
The team secured a deal to have their engines manufactured by current Red Bull supplier Honda, ditching Mercedes.
Team billionaire Lawrence Stroll, whose son Lance runs the team alongside two-time world champion Alonso, has spared no expense in his attempts to build a title-winning outfit.
