Arsenal’s late disallowed goal for Gabriel Martinelli’s offside is “by far the biggest VAR decision so far”, says Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.
1-1 scoreBukayo Saka sparked scenes of wild celebration when he headed home Martinelli’s cross in the 88th minute, but a VAR review showed the latter was offside and the goal was ruled out.
The game ended at Craven Cottage with Arsenal missing a huge chance to stay four points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table. The Reds’ game against Everton on Saturday has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
Discussing the late drama and the impact it could have on the title race, Redknapp said Super Sunday“What a weekend for Liverpool. Manchester City drop pointsArsenal are dropping points and they are in a better position.
“Arne Slott had his heart in his mouth watching these last few minutes and the biggest VAR decision of the season so far.
“It was absolutely incredible, but Martinelli just had to keep himself out of the game.”
Comrade Sky Sports pounds Paul Merson “He’s offside, but in football terms it’s criminal from Martinelli.”
“You can’t be offside. You’re looking along the line. He’s got speed, so he’s not the one trying to run the yard and play right on the edge.
“I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t end up in the dressing room with the manager because even he knows. You can see it in his face after that, he knows you can’t do it.
“One thing when you look at that line, don’t be out of the game. It’s as simple as that.”
Merson: Liverpool’s edge in the title race
Former Arsenal striker Merson also believes the draw is a damaging result for Arsenal and that they need to win at Craven Cottage to lift the league title.
“It’s not a good result,” he said. “It’s two points down, they just had a bit of a run and at the end it was a nightmare with a goal disallowed.
“They should have won this game. Advantage to Liverpool.
Arsenal could be four points behind Liverpool and that would be a huge advantage for them.
“Liverpool have one game now and it’s a bad run. It’s not an easy place to go but if you want to win Premier League titles you have to win at Craven Cottage.”
Arteta: We cannot cry over the result
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was keen to highlight the positives of his side’s performance despite the draw, adding that he did not want the players to feel sorry for themselves.
He said during the post-match press conference. “I’m sad we didn’t win it because I think we deserved it from start to finish. We did almost everything we had to do to win it.
“But this is the quality of the competitor. with one chance they score. And then we could sit with three points here after a really, really good team.
“You can’t cry about that. That’s the beauty of this league, the way they’re playing today, even against good competition. I’m really happy about that.
“We had a really good performance against a really good team. You don’t usually see games like that here.
“Now we have to continue to improve and look at what we can do better so that the opposition have zero chance of winning the game. That’s the goal.”
Fulham manager Marco Silva has been added Sky Sports“We had a plan and the first thing was to praise the players for their commitment and we stuck to it. It’s a difficult performance because on the ball it wasn’t the game we like to play normally.
“After the early goal, Arsenal started to put pressure on us more. The weather conditions weren’t good either, but it created a few problems for us to play the way we usually like to play on the ball “.
