Anthony Gordon says speculation over his future has affected his performances but insists he loves Newcastle United and is desperate to win trophies with them.
Newcastle suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat at Brentford last weekend, just days after Gordon scored in a 3-3 home win over Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The former Everton striker celebrated his goal by gesturing with his hands and speaking to Newcastle fans to receive the Disabled Fans’ Player of the Year award, with Gordon suggesting that talk of a move to the Reds last summer was behind the goal. celebration
“I loved the game, I didn’t need any more motivation for the game,” Gordon said Sky Sports News.
“The celebration was that I had heard so many conversations this year about my future, where I’m going, where I want to go, without anyone asking me.
“Just let me play football, I just want to be happy, play football. I like it here, I’ve said it many times, I think with the assumptions people assume everything is right when you’re never listen. For once I am unhappy with this place, I like to play football here.
Gordon added: “It’s taken away from me enjoying my football this year and I think that’s where the inconsistencies (in performances) come from because I’ve been caught up in it a bit.
But I just want to play football, especially for Newcastle.”
Gordon is not the only Newcastle player to have reportedly shown an interest, with Bruno Guimaraes and Alexandre Isak among the players being courted by other clubs.
“I’m only 23 years old,” Gordon said. “All I’ve heard is, ‘When she leaves.'” Who said I was ever going to leave?
“I’m very, very happy here, I love this place, I love playing football here and I think probably Bruno and Alex think the same.
“But we’re all young, we’re all human, so if people talk about it, it kind of calls into question our character. It’s hard.”
Gordon said nothing would come close to winning the title for Newcastle United.
“Everyone (in the squad) is in the same boat,” he said.
“If we can win a title for this club it would mean the absolute world. Obviously the league means a lot to us because all our players want to play in Europe, we want to play at that elite level.
“But for me, since I’ve joined and probably always will be until that happens, the main priority for me is to win a trophy.”
