LOS ANGELES — LOS ANGELES (AP) – Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement, her attorney said Monday, ending one of the longest and most contentious divorces in Hollywood history.
Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, confirmed to The Associated Press that the couple had reached an agreement. The settlement was first reported by People magazine.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Simone said in a statement. “She and her children gave up all the properties they shared with Mr. Pitt, and she has since focused on finding peace and healing for her family. This is just one part of a long process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is tired, but relieved that this part is over.”
No court documents have yet been filed, and a judge will have to sign off on the settlement. An email to Pitt’s attorney seeking comment Monday night was not immediately returned.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were one of Hollywood’s most prominent couples for 12 years. The two Oscar winners have six children together.
Jolie She filed for divorce in 2016. After a private jet flight from Europe, she said Pitt had abused her and their children. A judge in 2019 divorced and declared unmarried, but the division of property and custody of the children had to be resolved separately.
A private judge hired by the two to handle the case issued a decision shortly thereafter that included equal custody of their children, but Jolie He submitted to remove it due to an unreported conflict of interest. An appeals court agreed, the judge was removed, and the couple had to start over.
Details of the settlement were not immediately released, and the couple’s use of a private judge — an increasingly common move among divorcing celebrities in recent years — has kept the proceedings under wraps. Some of the details, however, have been revealed through a separate lawsuit filed by Pitt, in which Jolie is said to have reneged on an agreement that would have sold half of a French winery they both owned. It is unclear how the divorce settlement will affect that case.
