Republican Rep. Mike Lawler argued Sunday that House Speaker Mike Johnson should be up for re-election, despite Republicans squabbling over whether he should keep the post. how he managed the expense bill that prevented a government shutdown last week.

“Mike Johnson inherited a disaster when Matt Gaetz and many of my colleagues joined 208 Democrats to get rid of Kevin McCarthy, and that will go down as the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in politics,” the New York lawmaker said on ABC’s “This.” Week” co-star of Jonathan Karl.

“Having said that, getting rid of Mike Johnson would be equally foolish. The point is these people are playing with fire, and if they think they’re somehow going to get a more conservative speaker, they’re kidding themselves,” he said. , indicating that Johnson was successful in maintaining the Republican majority.

“I will not bend to their will,” he continued. “So if they think they’re somehow going to end up in a stronger position with Mike Johnson out, they’re not.”

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
