Linda Lavigne, best known for her starring role on the 1970s TV sitcom Alice, has died, TMZ has confirmed.
The actress died Sunday in Los Angeles of complications from lung cancer she was recently diagnosed with, according to her representatives.
Lavigne began her career on Broadway in the late ’60s before heading west to Hollywood in the ’70s.
In 1976, Lavigne landed the lead role of Alice Hyatt in the CBS show Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, based on the Martin Scorsese film about a widow who works as a waitress at Mel’s Diner in Phoenix, Arizona. to support her young son.
The sitcom’s title was later shortened to “Alice” as Lavigne’s character became an icon for all working mothers, and the hit show ended in 1985. Lavigne won two Golden Globe Awards for the role and was nominated for a third.
Lavigne also starred in another popular 70s sitcom, Barney Miller, as well as several Neil Simon Broadway plays, notably The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Broadway Bound.
Lavin was 87 years old.
