Tyson Fury has revealed that he suffered a personal tragedy on the eve of his first fight with Oleksandr Usyk, before only learning of his wife’s miscarriage after returning home.
Paris Fury was six months pregnant with the couple’s eighth child, a boy, but miscarried a day before her husband lost his WBC heavyweight title to Usyk in Saudi Arabia in May.
Speaking on the subject for the first time at the launch press conference for the Fury-Usyk rematch on December 21, the British boxer said he was shielded from the news ahead of his bid to become the division’s first undisputed champion in 24 years.
Fury said. “(The child) that he had, he lost that fight Friday, which was beautiful. She was six months pregnant. It’s not like a small miscarriage at first.
“You have to give birth to a dead child physically on your own, and your husband is in a foreign country, it’s not good to go through it on your own.
“I couldn’t be there for him at that moment. And that’s hard for me. I’ve been with my wife longer than I’ve been with her, so it’s hard that I couldn’t be there for her at that time.
“When he said he couldn’t get close, I knew there was a problem. He’s usually out the week of the fight, but he said he has high blood pressure.
“Alalshikh of Turkey (Chairman of the General Directorate of Entertainment in Saudi Arabia) offered us a private plane to deal with high blood pressure and said he could bring the doctor with him.
“He said he couldn’t come. I asked him what was wrong and asked him to tell me, but he didn’t. So I knew, I knew, I knew there was a problem.
“I said to my brother, ‘She’s lost that baby.’ She never told me she lost the baby, but I knew. When I returned, I got the inevitable confirmation that it was gone, but he had kept it to himself.”
Fury insisted the situation had no effect on his clash with Usyk, who won the Ukrainian by split decision.
He added: “That’s no excuse, hell no. I am an honorable man. I do what I have to do when I’m there. I don’t think about things like that when I’m in that fight.
“Outside the ring, nothing is important, there are no emotions, then you think about it all.
“We’ve had miscarriages before. It happens. Will we have any more children? I don’t know if he’s back to normal since then, that was only a few months ago. It takes a lot.
“But now there is no more of these sick things, for I will burst into tears.”
