MINNEAPOLIS — Democratic candidate for vice president Tim Waltz He walked through the tall grass Saturday morning on the opening day of Minnesota’s pheasant hunting season, giving the campaign an opportunity to highlight the governor’s rural roots and love of outdoor sports.

Neither Walz nor Gov. Peggy Flanagan managed to bag a pheasant while hunting near Sleepy Eye, a town about 90 miles southwest of Minneapolis. But others in their party shot six birds on a beautiful fall day, the governor’s office said.

“They can hide, they can get under the grass,” Walz could be heard saying as they searched for a downed bird.

Vice President’s campaign Kamala Harris it has been to face clearly a question that some men refuse to vote on because it’s a woman. Key supporters are beginning to make more direct appeals to male voters, hoping to overcome sexism — and apathy — as Election Day approaches. Harris he disclosed in his discussion With former President Donald Trump last month as a gun owner.

On Friday, the Democratic ticket announced the launch of Hunters and Anglers for Harris-Walz, a national organizing program to engage sportsmen, conservationists and rural voters in key states.

Trump’s campaign mocked the walkout, accusing Walz of “trying to make room with male voters.” The campaign statement falsely claimed that no weapons were in sight during the hunt, calling it “a sign of the future of a Harris-Walz administration.”

While it’s true that a 36-second MSNBC video clip tweeted by the Trump campaign did not show a gun, Walz and his entourage filmed it before donning bright orange safety vests and hard hats and heading onto the field after security. Information from a conservation officer. Shotguns were held high to avoid endangering the energetic pointers and Labradors trying to sniff out the birds for the hunters.

Although Walz had the highest rating from the National Rifle Association during his 12 years in Congress, he changed his stance on gun issues after a series of school shootings. As governor, he signed the legislation in 2023 expanding background checks for gun transfers and a “red flag law” that allows courts to temporarily take away firearms from people who are in imminent danger of harming themselves or others. His wife, Gwen, has been a champion of gun safety legislation.

“Sorry Tim, men don’t vote for a gun grabber,” Trump he tweeted the campaign from an official account.

The Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunt Opener has been a tradition since 2011, marking the start of the state’s fishing and deer season. It rotates through host communities in southern and western Minnesota pheasant country.

Walz went hunting the morning after attending a football game at Mankato, where he was once an assistant coach.
