Rejuvenating Herbal Face Steam

I am famous for my unusual skincare regimen. They usually include herbs or essential oils and sometimes Ice cream Or even mud on my face. There are so many plants in nature that provide a variety of skin benefits. This herbal facial steam is a great way to get some benefits!

I have done steam before Mainly congestion or upper respiratory support. The herbal steam makes the all natural face look amazing. It is very easy to do and no tools are required.

You can pick and choose which herbs you want to use. Use just one, or use a combination of whatever you have on hand.

The best herbs for facial steam

There are many different plants that work well on the steam front and you probably have some in your pantry. Feel free to mix and match from this list or use something completely different. Make sure it’s not something that irritates your skin.

Here are some of my favorite herbs to use in herbal facials.

  • Rose flowers – Rose has long been used for glowing, youthful skin. Fragrant flower petals have good aromatherapy benefits to relieve heartburn. In the year A 2015 study found that rose helped reduce skin elasticity, moisture levels, and wrinkles.
  • Lavender flowers – Calming and soothing to the skin, lavender is a skin care favorite. It is naturally anti-inflammatory and helps repair damaged skin.
  • Mint leaves – Refreshing and invigorating, fresh mint relaxes arteries and promotes circulation for faster healing. It’s also a source of vitamins and minerals that thirsty skin needs!
  • Calendula flowers – Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, calendula has a wide and long history of benefits for treating wounds and damaged skin.
  • Chamomile – The flowers and leaves have an apple-like floral scent that is soothing and relaxing. As it has the same effect on the skin, it is good for soothing irritated and damaged skin.
  • Comfrey – This plant is another favorite for skin care. Both flowers and leaves are very effective in healing damaged skin and even bones. It promotes tissue repair and cell proliferation.
  • Echinacea – People use flowers or leaves locally for various skin complaints, such as damaged skin, eczema, varicose veins. Echinacea is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral, so it is also beneficial for the skin.
  • Helichrysum – This herb has yellow flowers with powerful skin benefits. It’s drying, warm and sticky, so if you have dry skin, pair it with a nourishing herb like violet or marshmallow. In the year A 2020 study looked at a night cream containing helichrysum and found it significantly improved wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and UV spots.
  • Horsetail – Packed with micronutrients including silica for more protective skin. It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and is commonly used to treat wrinkles, acne and skin.
  • Lemon – Not only for lemons, lemons have many benefits for the skin. The juice is rich in vitamin C and acid, and the peel contains volatile essential oils that uplift mood and brighten dull and damaged skin. In the year A 2013 study found that lemon juice was more effective for skin disease than the conventional alternative tested.

How to do herbal facial steaming

I prefer to use herbs that are gentler on the skin and don’t have strong volatile oils that can irritate my skin or eyes. Cinnamon and oregano come to mind!

You may have seen some facial steamers in stores or online. Companies often make facial cleansers using plastic, so you’re heating the steam through the plastic directly onto your pores. The pot on the stove is not the most beautiful, but sometimes simple is better (and cheaper!).

Also, you can’t add herbs to the front of the steamer or it could cause damage. Again, another victory by doing it the old way.

Step by step front steam directions

  1. Simply place the herbs you are using in a pot of very hot, distilled or distilled water. Make sure it’s not too strong or you could burn yourself.
  2. Turn off the stove and/or move the pot to the counter. Place a towel over your head and lean against the steam.
  3. You want to be close enough for the steam to wash over your face, but not too close to get steam burns.

If you’re looking for a more specific recipe, here’s one to get you started.

Refreshing herbal facial steam

  • Put the water, lemon and herbs in a clean pot and slowly bring it to a boil with the lid on. This helps preserve more volatile oils.

  • Turn off the flame and lean over the pot with your eyes closed. Be sure not to get too close or you’ll get burned by the steam! I find that when the water is cold, I will be closer. You can hang a towel over your head to trap the extra steam.

  • After the pot has finished steaming, steam your herb face.

The herbs I used here can be mixed and matched with any skin care friendly herb. Discard only about 1/3 cup of herbs in total.

You can save a little time and mix the plants in bulk later. Add only 1/4 cup of each (or as much as you like) and store in a large glass jar. Remove 1/3 cup when ready to use. Then you just need to add freshly squeezed lemon and water to steam your face!

What are some of your favorite herbs to use for skin care? Have you steamed before? Leave a comment and let us know!
